Montana Horse Sanctuary is always looking for donors and volunteers. Our immediate needs are:
- Money or an in-kind donation to buy land/facility: $3 million.
- Assets for a carefully managed trust fund endowment to operate the sanctuary in perpetuity: $3 million.
- Money to provide basic necessities such as hay, grain, supplements, veterinary care, and tack.
- Donations of tack, horse care products and feed.
- Volunteers to help with fund raising, workshop planning, horse care, etc.
Needs list
If you prefer to give goods, the following are items which would make the horses more comfortable and make our jobs easier:
- Basic equipment
- Stock Trailer
Larger, wider trailers are definitely safer and more comfortable for horses. The trailer the Sanctuary is currently using is privately owned by the executive director and her family. The Sanctuary would like a new-used stock trailer with an enclosed tack room and a gooseneck hitch. The approximate price ranges from $5,000 - 12,000 depending on age and quality.
- Fence panels
Heavy duty, horse-safe fence panels would give the Sanctuary more flexibility in keeping horses separated as necessary. We have researched panel prices which vary week to week because of steel prices. 12-foot panels range in price from $70 to $90 each. Even just 4 panels would make a big difference for the Sanctuary.
- Hoof Jack
This specially designed hoof stand lessens fatigue for the horse and helps the handler be more comfortable and safe while treating hooves. A hoof jack costs $165 plus approx. $12 shipping and can be purchased from W Brand in Livingston at (406) 222-1155.
- Rubber mats
The alleyway of our barn is dry and dusty. Rubber mats would make that area cleaner and easier to clean as well as making it more sanitary for the variety of horses who use it. Most mats cost approximately $40 each for 4x6 foot mats. To cover the entire alleyway we would need 24 mats. To cover just the area where the horses stand tied, we would need 12 mats or 4 per tie space.

Feed
- Hay
We use low-carb mostly grass hay grown near Helena. The Sanctuary horses eat approximately 17 tons each year at a price of $110/ton. If you are interested in donating hay, we can order the hay from our supplier or give you his number.
- Hay pellets
We feed Standley timothy hay pellets to several of our residents but mostly to Benjamin who eats a mash of hay pellets and LMF three times a day because he is old and has missing teeth. Hay pellets are currently priced at 10.99/50# bag.
- LMF Prime Time
Benjamin and Teddy eat LMF Prime Time G which is a formula for senior horses on grass hay (Benjamin eats grass hay pellets). We've tried other brands and this is the only one Benjamin can easily and safely digest. Teddy agrees with Benjamin that LMF makes the best formulation. A 50# bag is 18.50 and we use 4 pounds a day.
- LMF Super Supplement
Periwinkle, Coral and Teddy each eat a pound of this supplement each day. It s a great feed that makes up for some of our regional mineral deficiencies. A 50# bag costs 18.50 and we use 3 pounds a day.

We Must Expand To Meet A Growing Need
Montana Horse Sanctuary is rapidly outgrowing its current location north of Helena, Montana. We must find a Montana ranch or parcel of land which can sustainably support
25-50 horses year round. Our planned facilities will include a veterinary - quarantine barn, a large indoor arena, turn-out shelters, corrals, and large pastures. The estimated cost for land and facilities is $3 million.
